Mistral Large 4 enters public preview ahead of a weights release
The European lab opens an API preview while scheduling downloadable weights for later in October.

THE STORY IN THREE POINTS
- The public preview launched on October 6.
- Mistral schedules the weights release for the end of October.
- Launch benchmarks are Mistral’s reported results.
What was announced
Mistral launched a public API preview of Mistral Large 4 on October 6. The company describes a natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model with one trillion total parameters and 52 billion active parameters. The preview can be tried through Mistral Studio. Downloadable weights are promised for the end of the month, rather than available at the preview launch.
The details that matter
Mistral positions the model around coding, agents, professional work, and visual understanding. It reports training on its own European infrastructure and publishes capability evaluations. We attribute those results to the company and have not independently reproduced them or tested the preview.
Editorial context
An API preview and an eventual self-hosted model invite different evaluations. The first lets a team examine answer quality with relatively little setup; the second also involves hardware, serving software, maintenance, and access controls. A useful comparison would preserve the same tasks across both stages and record whether the released artifact behaves like the preview. That is an editorial testing approach, not a prediction about the final weights. Readers should keep the current access route and the company’s future release commitment separate when planning a trial.
