Ai2 opens AstaBrief, an 8B model for cited research reports
The release includes weights and training data, with a clear warning about the age of its evaluation comparisons.

THE STORY IN THREE POINTS
- Ai2 released AstaBrief on October 2.
- The 8B model writes cited reports from questions and retrieved excerpts.
- Most reported evaluation work was completed in 2025.
What was announced
Ai2 released AstaBrief on October 2, an eight-billion-parameter model that turns a research question and retrieved literature excerpts into a cited report. It is available in Asta’s Fast mode, and the institute is releasing model weights and training data. An example workflow supports adapting report generation to a researcher’s own PDFs.
The details that matter
Ai2 says most training and evaluation were completed in 2025 and that it has not rerun the full comparison against current frontier models. That caveat is essential when reading the reported speed and quality results. Open availability permits further evaluation; it does not establish present-day superiority.
Editorial context
A cited report is useful when its claims stay within what the underlying evidence supports. A practical test could select a narrow scientific question, inspect every cited passage, and count both unsupported conclusions and important omissions. Review time belongs in the comparison alongside generation time. Our editorial reading is that access to weights and data helps researchers examine the report pipeline itself. It also creates a path for local experimentation, while leaving the quality of retrieval, citation handling, and domain-specific conclusions as separate questions to investigate.
