Google gives source links more room in AI Search
AI Mode and AI Overviews are getting clearer paths to websites and reporting, with some displays still in testing.

THE STORY IN THREE POINTS
- Google announced source-link changes for AI Search on October 15.
- News carousels are expanding to more locations and languages.
- Official-page panels and clickable creator profiles remain tests.
More routes from answers to websites
Google announced changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15 that make links to other websites more visible. It is increasing how often inline links appear near the beginning of responses and giving related articles a stronger visual presentation, including thumbnails.
The company is also expanding news carousels to additional locations and languages. Those displays can highlight publications that a reader has selected through Preferred Sources.
What is still being tested
The announcement does not describe every feature as broadly available. Google plans to test a prominent section for official pages, with explanations of their relevance. It has also begun testing clickable creator and publisher names on AI Mode video results, linking to Search profiles. Readers may therefore encounter different interfaces.
Editorial context: visibility needs a useful destination
For readers, a well-placed link can make checking an answer easier. The next step is opening it and finding the passage that supports the claim. A visible source does not automatically validate every sentence around it.
For publishers, these interface changes raise a measurable question: do readers actually arrive and engage? Referral traffic, article completion and returning visitors would offer better evidence than link counts alone. This announcement supplies no guarantee of higher traffic or improved search rankings for an individual website.
